Counselor In Training

Our Counselor In Training program is a great step for 8th, 9th and 10th graders to learn what it takes to be a Camp Counselor.

The goal of the C.I.T. Program is to find participants that have a true desire to work with children. It is our goal to teach you through hands on experience the aspects of working with children at camp. This will include planning and implementing activities, organization of campers, discipline and at times parent interaction.

Each C.I.T. will be assigned a group each session. They will work with the counselors of their group with all the day to day operations of camp and will participate in all activities.   The C.I.T. Coordinator will ask the counselors to evaluate the C.I.T. that was assigned to their group and I will use those evaluations when hiring C.I.T.’s to be paid staff members in the future.

Returning CITs may register during regular registration times.  No application is needed.

New CIT’s must fill out the CIT Application and return it to Suzanne Richards by March 1, 2015.  Once applications are received, applicants will be contact by the CIT Coordinator in March to set up a short interview.  You will then receive a Welcome Letter and payment information.

With the aid of our support staff, the Darien YMCA offers campers with varying limitations the opportunity to participate in traditional camp experience in any of our camp programs.  Campers are immersed in camp in a fully inclusive program and campers are encouraged to participate in scheduled group activities.  Our camp offers eligible campers a 1:1 or 1:2 counselor to camper ratio at no additional cost.

Please see specific camp based on age/grade for fees and times.  Fees will be adjusted for those campers attending the ESY program.  Contact Suzanne Richards for more information and placement.
